10 Things Before You Leave for Vacation
- Clean out your fridge. Those leftovers may spoil by the time you get back and create a mighty smell. Don’t forget to check your expiry dates on your milk and other dairy products.
- Arrange for someone to pick-up your mail and water your plants.
- Do up your dishes, run your dishwasher if necessary.
- Make sure there aren’t any clothes in your washer. Wet clothes in a washer will become filled with mildew, which by the time you get back from a long trip or even a weekend will create a smell.
- Take out the garbage. Especially true if you have food in your garbage, you don’t want a smell when you come home.
- Look into light timers to simulate people being at home.
- Have a neighbor park in your parking spot.
- Turn your water heater temperature down to save on gas while you’re not home.
- Have someone mow your lawn or shovel your walk way.
- Get a house sitter. This is great if you’re leaving for more than a few days. It will give you peace of mind to know that your house is in good hands.
Lastly, before you leave double check your windows and doors are locked. Have a great trip!
